JERUSALEM, July 27 (Xinhua) -- Clashes broke out on Friday afternoon between Israeli police forces and dozens of Muslim prayers on the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, a holy site in Jerusalem, Israeli media reported.

A total of four Israeli police officers were wounded in the clashes with 24 suspects arrested, said the Israeli police.

When the prayer service on the mosque compound ended, "rioters" began firing fireworks directly at police forces, the Jerusalem police spokesperson was quoted as saying.

After the clashes broke out, the gates to the mosque compound were temporarily closed.

Palestinian witnesses said the incident began with a parade to mark the anniversary of Israel's removal of metal detectors that were temporarily placed at the entrance to the holy site following a terror attack there on July 14, 2017.

The Jordanian Islamic Waqf Ministry, the religious authority that governs the site, published videos showing Israeli police forces firing tear gas at Palestinians inside the mosque compound.
