SUVA, Dec. 30 (Xinhua) -- Fiji Police Force have issued a strong warning as illegal activities, arrests, fatalities, and serious accidents increase across the country during the busy December period.
Acting Commissioner of Police Aporosa Lutunauga said anyone breaking the law should expect firm enforcement, as police intensify efforts to maintain public order nationwide.
A month-long operation is underway from Dec. 15 to Jan. 15, to ensure safety during the festive season.
Lutunauga said police visibility has been significantly increased, with officers deployed across communities, business districts, and major highways. The operation includes continuous road patrols and targeted surveillance aimed at preventing burglary, drug-related offences, and other crimes.
Road safety remains a major concern, with 76 road deaths recorded so far this year, up from 66 during the same period last year. The figure does not include three additional fatalities reported last Friday, which police say is alarming.
Police are continuing nationwide road patrols and breath-testing operations, but Lutunauga noted that many drivers still ignore traffic laws when officers are not visible. He urged motorists to take personal responsibility, warning that reckless behaviour continues to cost lives.
Authorities say police will maintain a strong presence on Fiji's highways and will take swift action against offenders. ■
